Making Your Loft Conversion Safe for Children

Families with children in the South London boroughs of Croydon, Sutton, and Lewisham know how important it is to maximise the amount of space used in the home. While a loft extension is an excellent way to give your family additional space, there will also be additional safety measures put in place.

Whether your loft extension will be used as a child’s bedroom, playroom, or shared living space, the safety of the children in the home has to be a top priority. In this blog post, we’ll share with you a few tips on how to childproof your loft conversion.

Safe Stairways

While the thought of their kids going up and down the stairway sounds scary to some parents, you can’t have a loft conversion without a staircase. To avoid any accidents and make your loft extension both safe and accessible, handrails should be installed along the length of the stairs and a stair gate at the top.

High Windows

If the windows in your loft conversion are low enough for your child to reach, there’s a good chance that they could climb out of it and be seriously injured. Windows should be located high enough that younger children cannot reach them. Alternatively, to childproof your loft conversion, windows could be fitted with window guards to prevent a child from being able to open the window fully. Also, be sure to keep the chords and chains for the blinds tucked safely away.

Furniture Design

With the sloped walls and unique shape of the room, you’ll often have to get creative when furnishing your loft. Though you won’t want to sacrifice style and comfort for safety, always ensure your larger furniture items are fixed to the walls and located in areas where small children won’t easily bump into them.

Ensuite Safety

If your loft is an ensuite, some specific childproofing measures need to be considered. Bathrooms are typically filled with cleaning products, medications, and toiletries you wouldn’t want your little one to interfere with. Always ensure that your bathroom items are kept in a high cupboard and with a lock to prevent children from getting in.

Standard Safety Measures

In addition to the safety measures specific to your loft conversion, you also have to ensure that your standard safety measures are in place. Any electrical sockets, lights, and appliances in your loft extension should be childproofed. Make sure there are plugs over your sockets, appliances are turned off and unplugged, and any doors where you wouldn’t want your child to enter should be locked.
